Diasporate

A 10-minute danced duet on Ashkenazi, American Jewish identity.  The dancers weave together steps from Jewish folkdance with elements of ritual and prayer, yoga asanas, and vocabulary from the dance club. Audio interviews with young Ashkenazi Jews consider questions of whiteness, privilege, assimilation, and cultural appropriation.

Choreography by Moriah Ella Mason
Performed by Moriah Ella Mason and Riva Strauss

Diasporate was performed at Pearlarts Studios (Pittsburgh, PA) as part of the Charette series and at The Kelly-Strayhorn Theater (Pittsburgh, PA) as part of the newMoves Festival in 2015.
